Before You Start Cleaning
Make sure that you approach the cleaning process with care. If you scrub too hard, you can end up scraping or damaging your powersports helmet. You will also want to take off any accessories, such as the Bluetooth communicator units, to prevent them from getting damaged in the cleaning process.
The Liners and Cheek Pads
These parts face a buildup of sweat, hair products, makeup, and more, which gets gross in no time at all. For most helmets, these parts are removable so you can easily take them off. It's best to wash them by hand since it's much easier on the fabric. If you need to use a washing machine, make sure you put them in a washing bag and use a gentle cycle.
To hand wash them, get a bucket full of water and a mild cleaner (such as baby shampoo). Dampen a microfiber towel and gently wash the material, then let the parts air dry. Tossing them in the dryer can reduce their ability to absorb impact. If you need to make the drying process faster, pat them with a towel. Wait until they are full dry before you place them back in your helmet.
The Outer Shell
The best way to clean the caked-on grim off of your helmet's outer shell is by soaking a microfiber rag in water, then placing it on top of the helmet. Let it sit for a few minutes, then the grime should easily come off.
The Visor
If possible, take the visor off so that you can get a better clean. Use a soft microfiber towel and a cleaning product designed for your visor's material.
Helmet Maintenance
When you ride, wear a bandana. That way, you will have to wash your helmet liner less often. When you finish a ride, let your helmet air out before you put it in storage. If you can, try to clean away any gunk right away. This will keep the grime from hardening and becoming more difficult to clean off.
You will also want to be careful about how and where you store your helmet. Always place it in the storage bag it came with, rather than storing it loose somewhere. This will help guard your helmet from scratches, dents, bugs, dust, and so on. You can also get a helmet carrying case, which will help protect your helmet during storage and transportation. Whatever method you use to store your helmet, you will want to keep it away from your other motorcycle gear. Otherwise, the smells and gunk from your other items can easily get onto your freshly cleaned helmet.
