Kawasaki® as a company started in 1878 as a boat manufacturer. They branched out into trains, heavy equipment, and parts for airplanes and automobiles. Kawasaki® then branched out into America in the mid-1960s. The American Kawasaki Motorcycle Corporation built upon the legacy of Japanese manufacturing, which gave it a strong foundation to venture out into a new consumer base. The first American Kawasaki® factory was an old meat warehouse in Chicago. Soon the factory began producing two-stroke motorcycles to sell under the brand Omega.At the time, American riders prioritized motorcycles that were heavy and powerful. Kawasaki® became the premier manufacturer of superbikes internationally in 1969 with the release of the Mach III. In 1973, they followed up with the Z1. At the time, the Z1 was the most powerful four-cylinder and four-stroke engine built. Kawasaki motorcycles became widely successful, which allowed the company to build a unified distribution network.
