In The Beginning
Torakusu Yamaha started his eponymous corporation in 1887 in the Shizuoka Prefecture of Japan. He initially focused on producing top-quality musical instruments like pianos and organs, which is illustrated in the company’s logo of three intertwined tuning forks, used to keep pianos in key.After World War II, the economic downturn forced many Japanese companies to diversify their offerings in order to catch up and make use of wartime manufacturing machines. Yamaha’s then-president Genichi Kawakami chose to make the company a producer of small engines for motorcycles in addition to their musical product lines. They also began to produce motorcycles that made use of their two-stroke engines.
The rapid success that followed resulted in the spinning off of the Yamaha® Motor Company in 1955. Their two-stroke motorcycle line was complemented in 1968 with the development and release of motorcycles that had more powerful and efficient four-stroke engines. Popular motorcycle designs were rolling off the company’s assembly lines for the next few decades.
Further Expansion
The Yamaha® Motor Company further diversified their interests by entering the budding powersports vehicle market in the 1980s. They built and released their first ATVs in this decade, modifying and updating their designs to keep up with the rapidly shifting market. In 1986, their WaveRunner® was one of the first marine-specific powersports machines, paving the way for further development in the new world of personal watercraft.Today, Yamaha® continues to lead the way in the field of powersports. Both their ATVs and motorcycles see use as racing vehicles while remaining popular with both private and professional users as reliable forms of transport for work or play.
