Preparing for Your Recreational Ride

Before you can safely conquer the dirt trails, you'll need to do a bit of preparation. Start by wearing the proper gear to protect against the weather and in the event of a crash. Off-roading requires head protection by using a helmet, eye protection (goggles), and foot protection (sturdy boots). You'll also want to wear full-length outerwear to shield your skin from the harsh sun and accidents. If there's a chance of rain, you'll want waterproof outerwear.

Once you're ready to hit the road, you’ll want to perform a pre-ride inspection that involves checking your quad for any safety issues. If you notice anything odd, take your ATV in for maintenance.

You'll also want to pack an emergency kit for recreational riding. Make sure you have a wrench fitting your quad's bolt size, a knife, a flashlight, a fire starter, a rain poncho, an extra gas can, water, snacks, a map, a compass, a GPS, and a flat tire patch kit. With all these, you'll be able to handle many emergency situations that you might face on the trails.

Follow the Rules

While ATVs aren't bound to as many rules as cars on the highway are, the dirt trails aren't a free for all. Always keep to the designated trail. Off-roading is dangerous enough on smooth paths. While you ride quads, make sure to use proper riding form. It's better on your body and helps you maintain control of your four-wheeler. If you encounter other riders, yield to those in the passing group or those going uphill.

Adapting to the Trail

As you cruise around the dirt trails, be mindful of your surroundings. You may love the rumble of your quad’s engine, but not everyone does. Reduce your noise when you pass by houses or campgrounds. If you encounter an animal, be as non-threatening as possible. Turn your engine off and avoid sudden movements.

When you encounter a rut, keep both wheels on the edges of it. Drive slowly and follow its natural path. Try to keep your ATV wheels on the ground as much as possible and keep it level when going around a curve.
